Jane Addams' Early Life In Cedarville, Illinois, on September 6th 1860, Laura Jane Addams was born. She was the eighth out of nine children. Her parents are Sarah Weber Addams and John Addams. John Addams was a business man and was even friends with President Lincoln. Jane went to Rockford Female Seminary and Rockford College, where she studied medicine, but had to leave due to her health. At the age of twenty-seven, Addams went to London, England to see Toynbee Hall. Toynbee Hall was a facility to help the poor. This place inspired Jane Addams and her friend, Ellen Gates Starr, to establish a settlement house in Chicago.
